Discover the Coral Temple, a unique building located behind Unirii Square in Bucharest. With its fanciful architecture, reminiscent of a castle from a fairy tale, the Temple stands out from the surrounding urban landscape. Its colourful, filigreed facade, with turrets, arches and columns, will transport you to a magical and mysterious world.
Mosaic grandeur:
The Coral Temple is the largest Mosaic place of worship in Romania, an architectural masterpiece built in the mid-19th century. Inspired by the Tempelgasse synagogue in Vienna, destroyed by the Nazis during World War II, the Choral Temple is notable for its grandeur and rich decorative details.
A name with meaning:
The name "choir" comes from the existence of the choir, an unusual feature for synagogues. Worldwide, there are only about 100 choir temples, and the Temple of Bucharest is an outstanding example of this type of religious architecture.
A historic tribute:
The Temple's courtyard houses commemorative plaques dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust, while the interior keeps alive the memory of the contribution of members of the Jewish community to the struggle for Romania's independence and to the First World War.
Traditions preserved:
According to Mosaic rules, men and women are separated during prayer by curtains separating the rows of seats.
