A symbol of Romanian nature: the Hațeg Ranger Reserve is a unique nature sanctuary, where the fallow deer, the largest land mammal in Europe, is protected and repopulated. Visiting the reserve offers a memorable experience, an opportunity to observe the zebras in their natural habitat and learn more about the conservation efforts of this iconic species.
A journey into the heart of nature: the reserve is located in Hunedoara county, surrounded by a picturesque natural setting with rolling hills, green forests and sunny glades. Here, on an area of more than 300 hectares, the zimbres live freely, in conditions similar to those in the wild.
A chance for the zimbers: the Hațeg Reserve was set up in 1958 to save the zimbers from extinction. Since then, thanks to conservation and breeding efforts, the reserve's population has increased significantly, contributing to the species' recovery in Romania.
Education and engagement: the Hațeg Reserve also has an important educational role, providing visitors with information about the zimbres and the importance of biodiversity conservation. Visits to the visitor centre, walks through the reserve and educational programmes help to raise awareness of environmental protection.
