Discover a unique natural wonder, where mysterious flames burn from the depths of the earth
The Living Fire at Terca is a stunning geological reserve where columns of fire shoot out of the ground, creating a fascinating spectacle. Locals believe the fire burns forever, but in reality, the flames can be extinguished by falling gas pressure, wind or rain.
The scientific explanation of the phenomenon:
Natural gas deposits underground are ignited by quartz crystals on their way to the surface. The resulting fire is continually fed by gases from deep underground, keeping the flames burning. Sometimes the flames can even reach a metre high.
A fascinating legend:
A local legend tells the story of a many-headed dragon that terrorised the village of Terca, throwing flames from its nostrils. The Brave Mountaineer faced the dragon in an epic battle that lasted two nights and two days and succeeded in cutting off its heads. It is said that the flames coming out of the cracks in the scorched earth are the very heads of the defeated dragon.
